A Magical Flight ~ Christmas 2010 Revisited

A Magical Flight ~ Christmas 2010 Revisited

Finding a gift for Mr. Menace is a challenge.Β  First of all, his birthday is in November, just a month before Christmas. So that means my brain has to come up with two ideas within 30 days of each other.Hot Air Balloon ride, Dream Flight USA

He already owns every tool known to man, and 3 or 4 (or more) of most of them.

He doesn’t wear hats or caps.

He doesn’t follow sports teams.

He cares nothing about cars, as long as they run.

But adventure, he likes.

So sometimes, I take him on a short trip. Once to Vegas.

A couple of times to Philadelphia.

In 2010, I was reading my Groupon email and I saw something interesting.Hot Air Balloon ride, Dream Flights USA

I purchased the Groupons. but it was a year later before we were scheduled to use them.Hot Air Balloon ride, Dream Flights USA

Mr. Menace enjoyed helping with the pre-flight activities as much as the ride itself.Hot Air Balloon ride, Dream Flights USA

The company worked as a well oiled machine.

It was very interesting to find out how it all worked.

And soon, it was time for our flight.

Yep. The Groupons I purchased for Mr. Menace were for a Hot Air Balloon Ride.

We climbed into the huge basket along with 15 or so other people. That’s the owner/pilot with his hand on the bar in the middle.

This photo is from up in the basket just after lift off. You can see the imprint on the left where the basket sat on the grass.

And now… the views…

Our pilot buzzed the tree tops and Mr. Menace picked this leaf from inside the basket!

A balloon’s flight is totally dependent on the winds, so a landing strip cannot be decided in advance. After we had been flying for about 30 minutes, our pilot began to search for somewhere to land. Large open fields were not in abundance, but he spotted an open front yard and took it down.

The IDA ST sign was in the way, but one of the passengers grabbed it and pushed us away from it as we came down.

I am not sure I will ever be able to top this gift.

Socks or a tie just aren’t going to get it.

Please give me your best ideas!

What an amazing view from up high! I think I would have been scared too. And how about having a hot air balloon land in your front yard?! Ha!

    • gwingal says:

I have always loved heights Lisa. Mama says when she would get to missing me and wondering where I was, she would look out the back door and I’d be in the maple tree. And yes, what a surprise to see this GIANT balloon coming down outside your front door! πŸ™‚

    • gwingal says:

I haven’t seen anything this interesting in a long time. But I keep looking. I live a long ways from my folks and don’t get to see them often. So I am a bit jealous of your day too! πŸ™‚

I would love to go up in a hot air balloon and it’s going to be difficult to try and find something that comes close to this. Perhaps a trip in a microlight? We have an airfield quite close to us and the pilots will often take passengers on an sunrise flight.

    • gwingal says:

If you ever get the chance Michelle, you should do it. It is expensive but the experience is totally worth it. The extreme quiet (when the burner is not going) is amazing. πŸ™‚

  3. Leanna says:

My hubs is equally as difficult to buy for. He turned down a balloon ride and a race car rental, but I think they make really great gifts. And nothing new to store!

    • gwingal says:

Leanna, I have considered that race car drive, but I don’t think Mr. Menace would really be into it. I did also get him a one time flight lesson though, which he LOVED! πŸ™‚
