I am sure it is obvious to everyone that Mr. Menace and I both love to hold onto the past by saving memories. We both love antiques, vintage items, and things that remind us of days gone by.
Mr. Menace grew up about a block and a half from the Concord Elementary School, here in Alabama. According to their website, Concord Elementary School, this building was built in 1956, but there has been a school in Concord since 1886.
This is the stage, where Mr. Menace, as a fifth grader, won third place in the talent show. He did a comedy routine and I guess that’s where his humorous personality began to shine. The stage is actually behind the wall with the mural. This wall was an addition to form two separate classrooms in more recent years.
Mrs. Sanders classroom. Where Mr. Menace got his first F. He remembers that fact but not what it was for.
I took these pictures in 2013, just before this building was totally torn down. A new building had been built a couple of miles away and this one slated for demolition. Mr Menace stopped and asked the demo team if he could get a few things. They were non-committal but did indicate that the items were just going to the landfill.
For several weekends during the demolition period when the crew was away, many of the area residents, stopped by and gathered bricks from the torn down walls. I have another project in mind for the pile that we collected, which of course will be a future post.
One morning on the way to work, we noticed that the whole rest of the building was down. Mr. Menace had to turn back to look, and what he found under the pile of debris was this treasure, the piece that we really wanted.
Stay tuned… exciting events to come!
